Airbrush Tanning

Airbrush tanning is a method of sunless tanning or getting a suntan without exposing yourself to ultraviolet rays. It uses an air-operated tool that sprays the color you desire to your body — head to toe. It is strongly recommended that airbrush tanning be done by professional technicians because it requires specialized equipment and might pose harm to the body if done incorrectly. This method of tanning is often preferred by those who are afraid of ultraviolet radiations whether from the sun or from tanning beds.

Airbrush Tanning Do’s and Don’ts

If you want to try this type of sunless tanning, there are some things you have to remember. Preparing for the airbrush tanning session is one of them. Before the session, take a shower, exfoliate and shave. It is also important not to apply any type of lotion to your skin. Do not wear make up. Do not use face creams. Wear loose clothing. You wouldn’t want your clothes to smear the color of your skin after the session. Never wear any jewelry. They might cause uneven tanning.

After the tanning session, do not take a shower for 12 hours because it might wash off most of the color. After 12 hours, you don’t need to worry about anything. It’s done! You can enjoy your perfect tan look. It will last for five to ten days. If whenever you shower you see some of the color being washed off, don’t panic. It’s normal. And remember to apply some sunscreen before you go out. Tanning does not shield you from the damaging effects of the sun.

Health Warnings

There’s also controversies going on in the cosmetic and medical communities regarding safety. Although airbrush tanning uses dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a chemical approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for cosmetic purposes, some insist that it still can be hazardous. However, the risks lies on the application of this chemical. If not applied properly, chemicals might be inhaled, ingested or enter the eyes, which may cause damage. The FDA recommends protective measures for the eyes, nose and mucous membranes.
