Badminton shoes aren’t your regular run-of-the-mill rubber shoes. These shoes are lightweight and are fitted with superior rubber, or any similar non-marking, high-traction materials. They are also comfortable despite continuous lateral movements.
Compared to average running shoes, badminton shoes have little to no lateral support. Lateral support is a type of physical backing that helps prevent sideways movement. Lateral support is essential in running games and sports, but in raquet sports, particularly badminton, it is useless to the point of having to design separate shoes for badminton alone.
More on Lateral Support and why it isn’t needed in Badminton
High grades of lateral support are only passable in activities where lateral motion happens unexpectedly and its results are undesirable. However, since badminton requires powerful and definite lateral movements, lateral support in shoes is of no use.
In addition, running shoes with good lateral support won’t be able to protect the player’s foot in badminton. Instead, the forced lateral movements cause catastrophic collapse to the shoe’s design, and the moment the shoe fails, the weight of the movement is transferred over to the player’s ankles. This occurrence has caused quite a number of ankle-related injuries in the past.
