Before it became a sport, skiing was originally a way to get from one place to another in snow. Sondre Norheim of Norway is considered the father of modern skiing because he supposedly improved the bindings that attach the foot of the skier to the skis. Since then, skiing has evolved from a mode of transportation to a recreational pastime and a competitive sport.
