Talent and hard work are not enough to make a squad stand out at competitions and events. Perfectly executed, cutting-edge choreography is key to a routine that will wow the crowd and impress the judges. There are two basic ways to come up with a hot, choreographed routine: hire a professional choreographer, or brainstorm a routine with your coach.
Professional Choreographers
A good professional choreographer should guarantee you a unique routine customized according to your squad’s talent level and ability. For that, the choreographer has to talk to you several times and ask detailed questions about your squad so that he or she can maximize all your abilities. Then he or she prepares a routine before meeting up with the squad to teach and polish all the stunts. Some choreographers include customized mixes along with the package. When consulting with the choreographer, find out how many hours will be spent instructing your squad and what other amenities are included in the package. Also ask the choreographer for his or her credentials—how long has he or she been coaching cheerleaders and how many of his or her clients have won competitions.
Creating Your Own Choreography
If you’d like to create your own routine without enlisting the help of a professional, consult your squad-mates and your coach for ideas. Determine if your routine will be a cheer, chant, or dance. From there, you can review your basic steps, poses and stunts. Cheerleading involves sending a message to the crowd using your body and the way you move your legs, arms, hips, and head. Reviewing the basics is like reviewing a language.
Once you’re done going through that, personalize the routine by adding specific chants and moves according to the event where you’ll be performing. For pep rallies, you’ll want to include chants or your school cheers so the crowd can cheer with you. For a football or basketball game, you’ll want to choreograph a halftime dance show. For a cheerleading competition, include difficult stunts and complex pyramids that will earn your squad the highest number of points.
