Mouth cancer is a dangerous and fatal disease, which can affect different parts of a perosn’s oral cavity, such as the tongue, teeth, gums, and lips. This disease has many symptoms that can vary from one person to another. Sometimes these symptoms are very obvious, although there are some that do not seem very perturbing or worrisome at all.
One of the primary symptoms of mouth cancer is the appearance of sores or lesions in different mouth areas. Mouth cancer sores are tender and raw-looking spots that look like small ulcers. They usually occur in soft tissue areas of the oral cavity, and can either appear as reddish or whitish patches. They can be painful and accompanied by a burning sensation. Even the slightest touch can cause them to hurt.
Even though mouth cancer sores look like dangerous and abnormal lesions, there are still some people who tend to disregard these oral cancer signs. One reason is because they mistake them for canker sores.
A canker sore (or aphthous ulcer) is caused by a rupture in the mouth mucous membrane. They can be painful and tender. But even so, these type of ulcers are not caused by cancerous tissues. They are usually a result of stress, accidental biting, food allergies or an accidental biting.
The reason why canker sores are mistaken for mouth cancer sores is their similarity in appearance. Like mouth cancer sores, they appear as whitish, with a small roundish cut in the middle, and reddened area around them. The difference between the two is that canker sores usually heal easily and in a short span of time. On the other hand, mouth cancer sores usually last for a couple of weeks or more. They can develop and grow bigger if not given medical attention immediately.
If you notice mouth sores in your mouth that do not heal, you should immediately consult a physician or your dentist immediately for you to find out if you are or are not at risk of mouth cancer. Early detection of mouth cancer will allow you to undergo treatment immediately to avoid further painful complications brought about by the disease.
