In a world of technological advancements, it’s hard to imagine that some people develop revulsion to or fear of modern technology. But the sad truth is, some of us really suffer from technophobia. As life prospers along with technology, technophobia hinders other people’s progress and affects their lives at an alarming level.
Signs and Symptoms
Often considered the opposite of technophilia, technophobia affects a person’s level of confidence. It invokes a full range of negative emotions such as stress, nervousness, incompetence and fear. While most people are highly dependent on their personal computers, mobile phones and other technical gadgets, a technophobic struggles to conquer their fear of using these modern devices.
The most common signs and symptoms of technophobia include extreme perspiration, hasty guzzle of air, palpitations, extreme apprehensions, nausea and queasiness. Individuals who suffer from this phobia also experience panic attacks. They also feel completely exhausted and annoyed when surrounded by or presented with hi-tech devices.
Some sufferers have problems running errands at the bank. They tend to conduct business with tellers rather than using the ATM. They also find it hard to handle or operate the computer no matter how easy the tasks are.
Causes and Treatments
Like many phobias, technophobia can be overcome with psychotherapy. Remember that phobias are developed by the unconscious mind as a defense mechanism. A technophobic could have experienced an event which links computers or technology to a terrible event, creating emotional trauma. This condition may also be triggered by benign events such as TV, movies or witnessing someone else experience trauma.
The good news is that there are many treatments that can help you get rid of the symptoms of technophobia. Psychotherapy is always a good method of overcoming phobia. Here are some methods that can help an individual get over his / her fear of technology.
Hypnotherapy. This method helps reprogram the parts of your subconscious or unconscious mind that affect the individual’s fear. However, many people do not like the idea of someone else playing with their “personal psychological software.” If you trust your therapist, hypnotherapy can be an excellent solution. It’s safe and fast.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). This is the study and practice of creating our reality. A phobia is the result of the constructs you have created. With NLP, these constructs are modified so that technophobia is eliminated.
Energy Psychology. This emerging therapy is fast, safe and effective. This method has the same foundation as acupuncture but there are no needles used. It works like an emotional acupuncture. It easily changes your behavior and thought patterns.
It is best to ask your psychiatrist about the method that suits you.
Technophobia may sound silly to many but this is a serious condition. It can ruin healthy relationship with family and friends. It also becomes a hindrance in performing well in the professional arena; thus, affecting the individual’s sense of well-being.
