Tuxedo Tails

What do a bat and a formal tuxedo have in common? Both are usually black. Both are usually seen in the evening. Both can be easily associated with Dracula. Above all, a bat and a formal tuxedo have a tail.

A black tuxedo with tails is the ultimate formal wear for men. If you see a man wearing it, you can bet your life that he’s going to an extremely formal event. If not, he might be in a Dracula costume just about to attend a Halloween party.

Tuxedo tails are just as old as the tuxedo itself. It is said that the first tuxedos had tails. Back then, tuxedos were considered an attire for less formal or informal occasions. Tuxes with tails, together with a white waistcoat or a vest, a white shirt and black trousers, were the standard evening wear for men. About the turn of the twentieth century, it is believed that gentlemen in and around Tuxedo Park, an enclave of the rich in New York wanted to simplify the attire and chose to drop the fancy tail coats.

Today, tuxedo with tails only mean one thing: a formal event. Regardless of the time of the day the event takes place, the weather or the color of the tux, tails signal that the event is very formal. They also add elegance to the person wearing it.

Evening Events

The most formal events are usually held in the evening. For these events, tails are required. A black or dark blue tux looks best with two long tails hanging at the back. A tux with tails is usually worn with braces or suspenders, a white pique shirt, a bow tie, and a vest. Tuxedo tails also create an illusion of a more graceful movement especially when dancing. For a typical diplomats’ party, a tux with tails is a must.

Daytime Events

Daytime events usually require dark gray or dark blue tuxedos with stripes or white tuxedos. They are usually considered less formal. If you are throwing a party or a ceremony in broad daylight and you want your guests to get the idea that it is a very formal occasion, require men to come in a tux with tails.

Weddings

When it comes to weddings, the groom is usually seen wearing a tux with tails. Aside suggesting the formality of the occasion, the tails also make the groom stand out amidst a sea of men in tuxedos.
