With hormonal methods of birth control, there are certain things that can limit or prevent a woman’s choices.
You should not take the pill if you are pregnant or if you think you might be pregnant. You should also not take the pill if you have had or have an abnormal growth or cancer in your breast(s).
Don’t take the combination pill if…
- you are over 35 and a smoker. You will be risking your life.
- you have had an abnormal growth or cancer in your uterus
- you have uncontrolled high blood pressure
- you have a history of heart attack or stroke
- you have a history of blood clotting or blood clotting disorders
- you have had liver disease or chronic liver problems
Talk to your doctor if…
- you have diabetes, or are predisposed
- you have high cholesterol
- you have gallbladder disease
- you are at risk for heart disease
- you have unexplained vaginal bleeding
Don’t take the progestin-only pill if…
- you have unexplained vaginal bleeding
- you have a type of nervous system cancer
- you have had liver disease recently
